Life is somewhere else – but where? It is summer of 1990 and Chile is headed towards big changes as dictatorship gives way to democracy after 17 years. We follow a group of idealists who, mirroring the country at large, try to forge a new future in a rural commune, but are plagued by forest fires as well as internal strifes. 16-year-old Sofia shares this fragile existence with her father, but her adolescent heart is calling on her to move on – perhaps she is too much like her mother, an artist who is always absent. She finds a possible avenue of escape with an older man, Ignacio, who drives around on his motorbike and ignites new desires in Sofia.
Director Sotomayor finds her own voice in her third feature film. The different lives whose destinies intermingle in the dry and dusty landscape are all longing for change, and the sparks that suddenly fly at random moments promise to deliver exactly this, sooner or later.
