DIAMANTINO is the story about a Portuguese soccer star who suddenly and surprisingly loses his scoring abilities during the World Cup. Diamantino, a thinly disguised Cristiano Ronaldo, wanders through life with a childish naivety, which his evil twin sisters exploit. The kind, but empty-headed superstar is soon tangled up in an absurd conspiracy including a government plot to withdraw Portugal from the European Union, mad scientists and a lesbian police agent going undercover as a male African refugee. And, surprisingly, some giant puppies in pink clouds are occasionally added to the mix.

This highly unusual satire combines lightheartedly silly goofs with rather heavy topics as the refugee crisis, the rise of nationalism and gender-bending. DIAMANTINO won the Grand Prize in the Cannes Film Festival's sidebar Critics Week 2018.
