10-year-old Dhunu lives with her widowed mother and older brother in a remote village in the Indian countryside. Unlike the other girls, she prefers to hang out with the boys, bicycling and climbing trees, to the disapproval of the village women. Most of all she wants a real guitar, so that she and her friends can start a rock band!
Director Rima Das has returned to her home village in Northeast India to shoot VILLAGE ROCKSTARS. The young local amateur actors, especially Bhanita Das as Dhunu, are doing a fine job in this warm-hearted coming-of-age story of defiance, female empowerment, dreams and friendship. The film is poetic with lingering shots, light on dialogue and heavy on natural beauty.
