Belly Button, a junk-collector, and Pickle, a security guard at a factory that produces Buddha-statues, are friends. Belly Button usually drops by during Pickle’s night shifts to read old porn magazines and watch TV. When the TV breaks down, they decide to watch the files from the dash cam in the factory manager’s car. The clips give them a glimpse in to a decadent world of willing women and shady business, until they get to see a little more than they should.
Through the movie, a voiceover (actually the director Huang Hsin-yao) gives hints of the characters’ thoughts and inner life. The movie is mostly shot in black & white, but the dash cam clips are in color, underlining the differences between the luxuries of the factory manager and the bleak lives of our anti-heroes. THE GREAT BUDDHA+ mocks corrupt politicians, and though it is a black comedy, the filmmaker clearly cares for society’s lonely losers. The film won six awards at the Taipei Film Festival 2017.
