Seventeen-year-old Maria Álvarez works on a flower plantation in a small, Colombian town. After unacceptable treatment from her boss she quits her job, despite her family’s dependence of her small but important income. Shortly after her resignation she discovers that she is pregnant. While in Bogotá, desperately looking for another job, she accepts a risky offer: becoming a drug mule for traffickers. She´s hoping for a new life in New York City, but the drug business is merciless.
MARIA FULL OF GRACE is a soberly told story from a cruel drug world, about a proactive young girl’s dream of change. Catalina Sandino Moreno received an Academy Award nomination for her leading role and won the equivalent award in Berlin together with Charlize Theron in MONSTER.
The film will be introduced by Kim Davies, which is a member of the writing workshop Youngblood and the New Georges Jam in New York. Her last play "Smoke" recently had its third season premiere at Flea Theater, New York. In addition, the play will be put up in São Paulo, Brasil and publiced in the prestigious magazines Playscripts and Overlook Press. In both 2015 and 2016 Davies has been attached to the Ibsen Internationals prosjekt "New Text, New Stage" in China. Davis has a Master's degree in Dramatic writing from Brooklyn College.
