A man who has chosen a lonely life in the wilderness of Finnmark is the protagonist of Egil Håskjold Larsen's new documentary. The film will have its official world premiere at the opening of TIFF in January.

In the film we follow 75-year-old Steinar. He lives in an isolated, frozen universe on Europe's northernmost tip of Finnmark, just one kilometer from the Norwegian border to Russia. Out here in the cold and rugged landscape, he finds freedom and tranquility. WHERE MAN RETURNS is a portrayal of the relationship between man and nature, and a life close to the elements.

Personal and universal, local and international

"I am very proud to present the world premiere of Egil Håskjold Larsen`s new film, a young and incredibly exciting Norwegian filmmaker who is better known abroad than he is in Norway. WHERE MAN RETURNS is both personal and universal, not to mention visually beautiful! A great opening film for the 29th edition of Tromsø International Film Festival”, says festival director Martha Otte.

"We in Yellow Log are incredibly happy and proud to have our premiere in Tromsø, and it is an honor to be part of the opening. TIFF has the perfect framework to show this film to both a local and international audience, and we believe that the film can help put the festival into the right atmosphere”, producer Racha H. Larsen says.

In the critically acclaimed 69 MINUTES OF 86 DAYS, Egil Håskjold Larsen's debut as a director, we followed three-year-old Lean and her family on the run from war and misery in Syria. In the new film, the filmmaker returns to his home, in Finnmark.

"I grew up in this landscape and have known my main character since I was a child, so this film was a way for me to get in touch with my childhood and with nature, something I have lost contact with during my life and wanted to explore again, says filmmaker Egil Håskjold Larsen.
