OSCAR WINNER WITH MASTER CLASS AT TIFF
In 2002 Asif Kapadia showed his film debut The Warrior at TIFF. We will show this and two other films made by Kapadia at TIFF 2018, in addition he will hold a master class. Based on SENNA (2010) and his Oscar-winning documentary AMY (2015), the director will give us an introduction to his unique methods as a storyteller.
With AMY Kapadia refined the storytelling introduced in SENNA, a technique that often remindes more of fiction than documentary. Without staged interviews, and with almost exclusively the use of a huge archive material, he has developed a distinctive style. The films feature classic narrative clips, with strong characters, dramatic action and emotional soundboard.
With a particular focus on AMY, the master class will explore the process of finding and developing the story. Important road choices, problems encountered along the way and how they were solved will be discussed through movie clips and concrete examples. SENNA will also be discussed as the film where Kapadia developed his methodology, and in addition you will see clips from his latest film MARADONA, which is still in after-work. Together, these constitute a trilogy of talent and fame in our modern media reality
