EXTRA SCREENINGS ON MONDAY

Birds of Passage (2018)
The festival is supposed to only last two more days, but with full venues and sold out screenings we're not ready to throw in the towel just yet. That's why we've added four more screenings to the calendar on Monday, so that TIFF can last a tiny bit longer!

The films you can buy tickets for are:

MONDAY JANUARY 21

Kl 14.00: BIRDS OF PASSAGE
Based on true events, the visually stunning BIRDS OF PASSAGE is an unusual feature film about drug trafficking in Colombia. The setting is the Guajira desert, a striking and monotonous landscape in the North of the country, where the indigenous Wayuu people live. Their lives are organized according to strict rules, governed by spiritualism interpreted and conveyed by strong matriarchs. One of them is Ursula. At the beginning of the movie she demands a hefty dowry from poor but ambitious Raphayet, who wants to marry Ursula´s young daughter Zaida. In order to meet the matriarch's demands, and follow through on the clan's traditions, Raphayet starts smuggling marijuana to the United States. Over decades, the whole clan becomes involved in the trafficking business, under Ursula's strict supervision.

Kl 16.30: THE RAVEN AND THE SEAGULL
The relationship between Greenland and Denmark is full of fantasy and myths. The colonial history is entrenched in both Greenland's infinitely beautiful landscapes and in the collective consciousness. But so is the willingness to break with it and look ahead with a new political self-awareness.

Kl 18.00: THE SWEET REQUIEM
A refugee is forced to confront her past in this intense and striking tale from the Tibetan exile community in India. 26-year-old Dolkar has made a life for herself in Delhi, where she grew up after fleeing her old homeland when she was eight – a perilous trek across the Himalayas with a fatal outcome for parts of the group. One day, repressed memories from the journey start surfacing. By chance she recognizes an older man: the guide that was supposed to help them cross the mountains all those years ago, but left them to fend for themselves on the deadly journey. Dolkar is determined to make him answer for his treason.

Kl 20.00: THE SECOND MOTHER
Val is a hardworking, live-in maid and nanny for a wealthy and supposedly modern São Paulo family. She knows her place. The job has made her able to support relatives and her own daughter Jéssica back home for the last 13 years. One day Jéssica moves to the metropolis to study and moves in with her mother in her employer’s house. With her arrival, the suppressing structures and hidden tensions in the household, get exposed. Feelings run high in the entire family.
