Panel discussion: Present Tense Europe

SATURDAY JANUARY 21st
15:30 – 17:00
RADISSON BLU

Free admission, open for all

The films in this year’s TIFF program “PRESENT TENSE: EUROPE” raise some provocative questions around racism, identity and social exclusion, and highlight complications concerning nationality and citizenship.

The films touch on controversial and potentially inflammatory topics such as race and immigration that can be challenging to discuss. Debates over hijab and burqa bans across many parts of Western Europe and the much-discussed rise of the 'new far right' often express a deep anxiety or confusion today about what it means to be Western, or European.

What does it mean to be European today, particularly with the context of the EU/Eurozone crisis?
These themes will be open for discussion at this panel debate, which will be moderated by David Bowden from the Institute of Ideas, a UK-based think-tank dedicated to expanding the boundaries of public debate.

Participants: Nasra Ali Omar, musician, Tromsø. Iffit Quereshi, writer, Oslo. Ruben Östlund, director of the film PLAY, Stockholm. Øyvind Hilmarsen, leader of the City Council of Tromsø.
Moderator: David Bowden

Hosted by Tromsø International Film Festival in cooperation with British Council, Oslo.
