Program 2018

western_-_official_trailer

A group of German construction workers arrives in Bulgaria. Their job is to build a power plant outside a small country village. One of the workers, Meinhard, gets to know the locals after riding into town on a horse. The new bond between German and Bulgarian culture results in high tension especially amongst the German workers, whose need for demonstrating their superiority provokes the village locals.

The conflicts and distrust in WESTERN are slowly building up, as the new relationships unfold in a naturalistic setting. It is possible to view the film as a reflection of a modern, fragmented Europe, but the fear of «the others» is undoubtedly timeless.

Introduction and Q&A with director Valeska Grisebach at the screenings on Thursday and Friday.
