Ferdi – a troubled young man, to say the least – finds himself repulsive. After living in the woods alone for years, he now resides in a home for people with special needs. He meets pretty and friendly Jona, who seems to like him. She is blind, so Ferdi dares to show his feelings, knowing she can’t see how ugly he is. The only trouble is, Jona is just pretending to be blind. How will Ferdi react if the truth comes out?
Director Tom Lass plays the role of Ferdi with awkward style. In other roles, Lass has cast friends without acting experience, including a couple of film directors (TIFF regulars Axel Ranisch and Dietrich Brüggemann). Jona’s blind friends are actually blind, giving the film a strange sense of credibility, considering it’s a romantic comedy. UGLY & BLIND is a touching movie with a twist, filled with quirky characters. The big question is: Does love make us blind?
