Summer 1976. Complications abound when an extended family, complete with in-laws and out-laws, converges upon their Bavarian summer compound to spend vacation time together, as usual. With one major difference: Family matriarch, Grandma Sophie, draws her last breath, shaking the status quo. Squabbling ensues; long thoughts of inheritance consume some family members to the distress of others. Too many wasps and a potential child abuser (or could it be a cannibal?) does not make the situation any easier for anyone.
First-time helmer Sonja Maria Kröner hits the mark on all counts in THE GARDEN. The atmosphere, the characters, the sensuality. She excels in her attention to details, letting images speak their own language. With no spectacular effects, this idyllic garden is transformed into a tragicomic family hell of the most familiar sort.
