Shy, paunchy twenty-something fisherman Gulli is part of a close-knit crew of six working on a rusty fishing trawler. When they set  out to sea one day in March 1984, everything is routine, until an accident with the trawl causes the boat to capsize in rough waters. The men are swept overboard into the cold, dark Atlantic Ocean. To Gulli’s horror, the others, including his best friend, quickly succumb to the elements. Gulli survives by a miracle. After six hours battling in the ocean for his life, he washes ashore. However, the ordeal is not over with his rescue. He becomes the object of widespread public speculation and intense scientific investigation. How on earth did his body withstand such conditions? Was he even telling the truth?

THE DEEP is based on a true story, and the film was shot under authentic conditions. It went on to become Iceland’s Oscar nominee and was shortlisted (one of 9 films) for the foreign language Academy Award.
