Marko and Dunja are parents of two clever and active children, and are living a happy life. They have a safe home and predictable and personally fulfilling careers. Then one day everything changes: Marko is fired from his teaching job after being falsely accused of sexual harassment, and Dunja is laid off when her company downsizes. Their world falls apart.
As a well-adjusted middle-class family, they get no support from the Slovenian welfare system, and the family must cope with the dramatically changed circumstances with little or no help. The chaos of their financial crisis makes the family lose its footing very fast, and they spiral into catastrophe. THE BASICS OF KILLING is a social drama telling a universal story about how quickly our lives can change, and how we depend on each other to make do in difficult circumstances. A reminder of how thin the line between happiness and despair can be.
