A nuclear submarine mysteriously sinks in the Caribbean Sea. A U.S. SEAL team, with help from a nearby oil rig crew goes into the deep to secure the nuclear warheads. Before long, they find themselves trapped underwater in the deep Cayman Trough and their communications with the surface are cut off while a hurricane rages above them. As tension mounts and tempers flare in the tight quarters, they discover that they are not alone in the deep – something unknown and inhuman is watching them.
The ocean covers 71% of the earth and is often being referred to as the world’s biggest unexplored continent. THE ABYSS, apart from being a spectacular underwater sci-fi thriller, explores our fear of the great unknown. But in the end, is it the others or us that represent the biggest threat? The film received the 1989 Academy Award for best visual effects.
