Ryan Green works as an independent video game developer. When he learns that his youngest son Joel has terminal cancer, he starts developing an unusual and poetic video game about handling sorrow and disease and how to live with a dying child. This documentary follows the Green family over two years. Ryan works on the game with his family, while they are torn between desperate hope and the realization that their son is already living on borrowed time.
Amidst all the sadness, there is still a lot of joy and love in THANK YOU FOR PLAYING. Creating the game helps the family through a very difficult time, and the film also challenges the notion of what a video game is, and what it is for. A touching and inspiring documentary about life, death, love and technology.
