While out biking one dark autumn evening, young Nicolai is run over by Jan, a neighbor, and hospitalized with serious injuries. Jan claims that the boy appeared too suddenly for him to stop, but Nicolai’s father Svein is not convinced. Although his wife wants him to focus on helping Nicolai, he confronts Jan, trying to find out what really happened. Meanwhile Jan presents a normal façade to the world, while trying to console his son who was in the car with him at the time of the accident.
The suspense in this film is caused by internal rather than external conflicts. The characters try to act normal, but they are quiet and subdued, and the camera, often off-center, lends a sense of their inner imbalance to the scenes. The music also accentuates the moods of several scenes. INTO THE DARKNESS is a slow-paced drama about guilt, anger and reconciliation.
